Incorporated in 1988, McCordsville is beginning to feel the effects of being conveniently located near several thriving cities and towns, including Indianapolis and Fishers.
McCordsville is located in the northwest corner of Hancock County just south of Geist Reservoir, bordering both the City of Lawrence in Marion County and the City of Fishers in Hamilton County. It is conveniently located off of State Highway 67 and less than 10 minutes from I-70, I-69, I-465 and SR 234.
McCordsville is currently the fastest-growing community in Hancock County.
The town recently constructed a small community park next to Town Hall which features a park shelter and tables, as well as a perimeter walking path.
The trails connection leads from north of the railroad track to 1000 North/96th Street so you can easily walk or bike to neighboring communities or to Geist Reservoir. The town has also recently completed a section of the trails system that ties into other sections around Geist.
Over the years, McCordsville has maintained its hometown feel while remaining conveniently located to city life. McCordsville is located less than 15 minutes from Interstates 70, 69, 465 and State Road 234, in the northwest corner of Hancock County and includes a portion of Geist Reservoir within our borders.
The town is still young and going through the usual growing pains. McCordsville is within an easy commute to Indianapolis, and the people of this active little burg take full advantage of that fact. It is this proximity, in fact, more than any other single factor, which accounts for most of its astonishing prosperity.
The History of McCordsville, IN
On Oct. 5, 1833, the US transferred 160 acers of land to William McCord, who was one of the first settlers in the area. The original plat for the town was laid out by James Nagley in 1865 and was named for the McCord family who lived in the area.
Around 1895, S. Morrison and Thomas Springer established a telephone factory at McCordsville. A few years later they sold it to the Eureka Electric Company, of Chicago, who operated the plant until 1902 when it was sold to Luther Frost, Seymour Morrison, Frank Martindale and others. The purchasers then incorporated under the name of the Columbia Electric Company and continued to manufacture telephones until 1905. In that year Luther Frost and others established the Leader automobile factory, in McCordsville, where the first Leader automobiles were assembled. This plant was operated until 1907, when it was moved to Knightstown.
A postoffice has been maintained in McCordsville ever since it has been a town. The office has one rural free delivery route.

The Littleton Barn - A three-story round barn with an expansive hay loft and cupola. The barn is 102 feet in diameter making it the largest round barn in Indiana. The design is simple with vertically symmetrical windows on the first and second floor with a series of square windows along the roof line. The large domed roof leads to the large cupola that also features a number of windows. The Littleton Barn has become a regular feature on Indiana barn tours and remains one of the most well-known barns in the state.
